Tootsie: The Sustainable iPad Folio by Papernomad

A Plain Yet Affecting Design for Modern Nomads

Papernomad, a renowned brand known for its environmentally friendly paperboard furniture, has taken a step further in sustainable design with their latest creation, Tootsie. Designed by Christoph Rochna for Papernomad, Tootsie is an iPad folio that combines functionality, style, and eco-consciousness.

Tootsie stands out from other iPad folios due to its unique properties and commitment to sustainability. Made from an organic paper composite, Tootsie is tear- and water-resistant, biodegradable, and free from fossil polymers. It is a testament to Papernomad's dedication to creating products that leave a positive impact on the environment.

Unlike traditional plastic covers that outlive electronic devices by decades, Tootsie is designed to be reused or composted when it's time to upgrade or part ways with the device. The folio is made from several layers of paper and a bio-polymer membrane, combined with cotton-padding, wool-felt-lining, and a pull-strap made from linen. It not only protects your iPad but also reduces waste and promotes a greener lifestyle.

But Tootsie is more than just a sustainable accessory. It captures the essence of modern nomads who live and travel through a world of constant change. In a digital world dominated by glass and plastic, Tootsie offers a soothingly analogue experience. It allows users to doodle, write, and leave their mark on the folio, creating a personal connection and documenting their experiences.

The functionality of Tootsie is also worth noting. It features a natural hemp strap with a magnetic latch to keep the folio closed. The iPad is secured inside the folio with two latches and a strip of small magnets, providing a secure catch without the need for a plastic shell. The lid of the folio can be folded backwards, and the hemp belt can be pulled over it to form a stand for the iPad, making it convenient for both work and leisure.

The realization of Tootsie involved months of development and innovative design solutions. Papernomad replaced the usual plastic components of a folio with paper, hemp, and magnets. The tear- and water-resistant paper composite used in Tootsie was developed in 2011 and has since been refined to meet the functional requirements of the folio. The result is a durable and eco-friendly design that challenges the norms of traditional iPad accessories.

Measuring at 214 x 147 x 12 mm and weighing only 112g, Tootsie is lightweight and portable. Its materials include paper, bio-polymer, PLA, felt, magnets, and cardboard, all carefully selected to ensure a balance between sustainability and functionality.

Tootsie has garnered recognition for its innovative design and commitment to sustainability. In 2014, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fashion and Travel Accessories Design category. This prestigious award celebrates designs that showcase creativity, resourcefulness, and a dedication to improving the quality of life.

With Tootsie, Papernomad has created a folio that not only protects your iPad but also reflects your values and lifestyle. It is a statement piece for modern nomads who seek sustainability without compromising style and functionality. Embrace the analog-digital balance with Tootsie, the sustainable iPad folio by Papernomad.
